Air India aiming for 300pc cargo capacity growth in the next 5 years

AIR India is strategically focused on expanding and strengthening its freight and cargo ecosystem to capitalise on the growing belly capacity of its fleet in the next five years, reports Montreal's Simple Flying.

With the introduction of new widebody aircraft into its fleet, Air India aims to play a pivotal role in supporting India's manufacturing and export growth, which, in turn, will create numerous employment opportunities.

To optimise efficiency and promote growth in the air cargo industry, Air India is implementing a range of measures and initiatives, including technology integration and infrastructure investments.

While maintaining its focus on passenger services, Air India is determined to enhance the freight and cargo ecosystem both within India and on a global scale.

The airline anticipates a substantial increase in cargo capacity as it expands its fleet and has already taken several proactive steps in this direction.

Air India is committed to bolstering India's cargo ecosystem, contributing to the establishment of an efficient air cargo supply chain, and facilitating accelerated exports from the country.

The airline is confident that the growing belly capacity of its fleet over the next five years will significantly boost its cargo revenue.

With the planned addition of new widebody aircraft this year and the arrival of most ordered aircraft from 2025, Air India foresees a synergistic alignment with India's manufacturing and export growth, leading to a rise in employment opportunities.

The introduction of 34 Airbus A350-1000, six A350-900, 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliner, and 10 Boeing 777X widebody aircraft will propel Air India's annual cargo capacity by an impressive 300 per cent.

This will translate into two million tonnes of cargo handled over the next five years, strengthening the airline's non-stop connectivity to key export markets worldwide.

"At Air India, we see a huge potential in the air cargo industry, which the Indian Government plans to grow to 10 million tonnes by 2030," said Air India CEO Campbell Wilson.

"Our cargo division is implementing a series of strategic measures aimed at fostering growth and strengthening our market presence. The large passenger belly capacity addition will be augmented with the launch of value-added products and services across the network."
